Recommended CMJ Showcases

If you’re attending CMJ this year here are a few showcases that I recommend. Most of them are put on by friends of mine or involve bands that I am a big fan of. If you see me bouncin’ around with a camera come say hi, I’m a nice guy.

When I clicked on this I thought it was going to be the original Sesame Street video where the orange sings Habanera, but it turned out to be a pretty decent song. Extremely catchy, and instead of being frustrated and turning it off, I kept listening. It’s been a while since a good pop song has caught me off guard like that.

And to me, that is a million miles away from where dubstep started. It’s a million miles away from the ethos of it. It’s been influenced so much by electro and rave, into who can make the dirtiest, filthiest bass sound, almost like a pissing competition, and that’s not really necessary. And I just think that largely that is not going to appeal to women. I find that whole side of things to be pretty frustrating, because that is a direct misrepresentation of the sound as far as I’m concerned.”

From my interview with James Blake in this week’s Phoenix. I particularly recommend reading up to the last two questions where he talks about covering female pianists (Feist, Joni Mitchell) in the ‘American frat-boy dubstep market’. (His words not mine.) He was really stoked on talking about this.

In light of recent events, I thought this was appropriate.

I FOUGHT THE LAW (COVER) by Adam Taylor Young

My summer roommate and good friend Adam Young was assaulted by cops Saturday night. You can read his story from the Allston Tumblr page here. Thankfully this is getting some local news attention, but I’m even more glad that Adam had the good humor to turn this around into a sick cover song as well as use the picture that was taken (yes, that is in fact him) to make a point. He’s not a violent guy in any way, and there are clearly better things for Allston cops to be worrying about (car torching, anyone?) Shit is going down in New York, Allston Rat City is on fire, and I’m stuck in New Hampshire with nothing to do but homework.

Hey guys, remember when I said I was working for the Phoenix? It was a wild and crazy summer, and now I’m back at UNH for the year, but I’m still doing a few things for the Phoenix, including my new column New Sampshire, so things at Robot Messiah are probably going to consist mainly of embedding music players without much writing… I’m busy. I love you all, but I am busy. Thanks for understanding, and make sure to keep up with the stuff I’m doing on The Phoenix. Seeya ‘round.

MY SOAP BOX SPEECH TO PUNKS WHO HIT THEIR GIRLFRIENDS

Last Wednesday at the OFF WITH THEIR HEADS/DEAD TO ME/THE HOLY MESS/FAKE BOYS show at Great Scott, I was reminded why some punks are there to celebrate solidarity and positive cultural change, and some are only there to get belligerent and hurt people.

Everyone goes to punk shows for different reasons. Punk music and ethics have always been divided by nature, but the inherently violent reaction to punk music, as well as the overarching theme of rage and aggression, can sometimes blur the lines between what punks consider moral.

Basically what I’m saying is some punks like to fight each other for the same reasons that macho dudes who go to bars fight each other, and they give the genre a bad name and a hypocritical following. It all happened kinda like this:

-everyone is moshing
-some dude does some sort of weird backwards somersault onto the crowd
-somersault dude knocks over some other dude
-dude that got knocked over gets angry and starts shoving somersault guy
-angry dude’s girlfriend tries to hold him back
-angry dude floors his girlfriend
-Great Scott’s security guards took care of things after that

If these guys are going to these shows to see bands like OWTH, who have a very strong stance against misogynistic violence, why do they still hit their girlfriends? I’m standing by my opinion that the well-intentioned anger fueled by punk music is being sucked up by its listeners and not channeled anywhere useful, so it builds up and gets spewed out at the wrong time to the wrong people. That, however, does not make it okay and it is shameful that this even happens in what is supposed to be a community based around changing the world for the better. Most people dislike punks because they are violent. I don’t dislike punks, but I wish they weren’t so goddamn violent towards each other. It takes a lot to change the world, and there’s no reason to use any of that force towards the people you supposedly care about.
